Ominous Seapods, 12/17/11, Valentine's Albany, NY

Ominous Seapods, 12/17/11, Valentine's, Albany, NY

Here's the thing about bands doing "farewell" shows-- I don't buy it anymore. They always come back. Reunions are the new black. And it's not a bad thing, I'm just saying that when a band calls it quits, it may take 2 years (God Street Wine), it may take 10 (Pavement), but they typically return in some form, eventually. Shit, even Led Zeppelin did it (with Little Bonham) in 2007^. Not that you could get a ticket for it, but you did at least try.

Anyways, when Ominous Seapods announced that guitarist/vocalist Dana "Monty Roberts" Monteith would be moving to Australia, the band set up a "Farewell" show, so we could get our last kicks in for at least the foreseeable future. It was hard to get too sad, because as Ominous Seapods fans, if there's one thing we can all acknowledge, it's that the Ominous Seapods love money. And as long as money exists, so will the probability that Dana will do a Stateside visit at some point, and seize the opportunity to play with the Seapods once again. Especially after he becomes a huge Australian Country Music Star, gets his own Private Jet, and starts gallivanting around the globe with his trendy Australian-American family and attend luncheons in Dubai with the Beckhams, who will secretly try and convert him to Scientology, until Dana offends The Powerful Lord Xenu with a tender love ballad about Wombat Jerky that hits a little too close to home, which will all happen-- MARK MY WORDS.

With their Winter Carnival 2011 performances still fresh in my mind, and the various reunion shows we've seen them play over the past 10 years, this show almost seemed par for the course. Another family reunion to check off the list. In fact, it didn't seem like it was actually happening. Not the entire time I drove way too fast up the NYS Thruway and somehow didn't get pulled over. Not during the entire lovely dinner with Rich, Liz, & a carafe of salsa. And not for at least the first 25-30 minutes of the show, when it felt like all I was doing was hanging out with friends while music was happening in the background. Valentine's was packed and we were kind of stuck behind the first stack by the stairs where there is not much of a view or vibe and a chilly wind blows up from the street to nip you in the ankles, but we had each other, and that was all that mattered.

Oh yah, there's a show? In the meantime, Jet Smooth, Blackberry -> As I Stand Here Now, during which, I found a crisp $20 note (it was totally clean) in the women's bathroom, which is by far the best thing I've ever found in the bathroom at Valentine's. A pretty Matchmaker. Groovy Rocking Taste Sensation Overload, a song Dana wrote with his brother-in-law about a particular experience in Australia, which resulted in his (Dana's) passing out. Ahh, Dana, The Diplomat! Out of Myself featured Todd "the New TP" Pasternack on lead vocals, and it is lovely to hear him sing again. And speaking of lovely to hear sing again, the Dark Horse lurked out from behind the keys to serenade us on AC/DC's smash hit It's A Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll). THE DARK HORSE SINGS AGAIN. He also pulled out--- a totally fucking sweet Melodica solo. All Glory to the Dark Horse!

They went super old skool with If I Had a Smile, but the show really kicked into full gear and/or the band finally got warmed up, when they busted into Guide to Roadside Ecology. The room was moving, the energy was flowing, the boys hit their fucking groove. The Albany Magic appeared. It finally felt like an Ominous Seapods show. Guide -> Michael Murphy III, including chant-a-long at the end, fucking fantastic. Then a beautiful (it's always beautiful) Cary Suite to close out the set. Awesome.

Setbreak featured Nanaimo Bars and me planting down in front of Tom Pirozzi's (aka The Old TP, Teep, Whiskey Tom) spot. At least that's all I actually recall. Shameless cross-promotional side note: TP will be performing with Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra (God Street Wine in rubber pants) on 1/28 in Jersey.

Set II kicked off with Bong Hits & Porn to set the mood and so we could watch Dana go "wah wah wah" with his mouth at least one more time before he takes off. Da Bomb. And a most specialtastic Pull From Adirondack Blue, wherein taking the sticks from our darling wonderful Ted "Tigerbeat" Marotta, was none other than Vinnie Amico from moe., and popping onstage to the left of TP, was North Country Freak, Josh Himmelsbach (Justin Trawick Group, Ten Feet Tall), on Mandolin. Bach totally fucking smoked his Mandolin with a fantastic smile on his face the whole time. While Vinnie, cool as a cucumber, played the song OLDSKOOLFASTTEMPO and the Seapods had no choice but to act natural and keep the fuck up. Vinnie and Bach kept them young! FUCKING AWESOME.

Soon thereafter, Dana started a "Drew Price" chant -> Original Plattsburgh Mutant Drew Price got onstage -> Max licked Drew's Ominous Seapods tattoo (yes), for at least the 2nd time in history. Max is a gamblin' man.

Next was another wonderful treat, as Teep filled the room with patented Teep Love, in the form of Anything is Possible. Awww, Teep. A few of us toasted to our pal Johnny Fishwick, who was definitely there in spirit. The hypnotizing Buddahful Belly appeared and all at once, the room became enveloped in a familiar haze (this may have been Johnny Fishwick's doing from beeeeyonnnnnd!!). The Mutation continued when Dana's life got Cancelled. The boys played him off with Men at Work's Land Down Under. Here's some video-- audio courtesy of Undertaper Productions. The end is a bit messy, coincidentally, because I was attacked by an Australian, who bore the strength of a thousand Tasmanian Devils.

Good to be Alive, Josephine's Grand Motion -> a romptastic Room of Ruins, and a bittersweet but triumphant Leaving the Monopole to end Set II. For an Encore they covered the Angels' Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again, leading the audience to chant back the answer: No way!! Get Fucked!! Fuck Off!!!

They attempted to end it all there, but Promoter Greg Bell, offered to pay the band another $100 to play another song (Greg wanted to hear the Old TP classic, SHIP). All of a sudden, in a totally unprecedented turn of events, the audience started passing money up to Dana to keep playing. Usually it's to get him to show his ass (or not) or dip his balls in hot sauce (or not). The boys collected some cash, stowed it in their garters, and played on.

We got a positively smoking Money to Burn, featuring Todd Pasternack on fucking fire, Ass Ferrets in full effect, getting it all. out. Wow. And then Max Verna on his bread & butter, Sneakin' Sally Through the Alley. His version would make Phish stop playing it out of shame. Fuck yeah, Max. Hope I Shall Arrive was a sweet sendoff, and then, finally, Greg Bell got his Ship, and even sang backup vocals on the ever popular chorus, "Don't wanna swim in shit no more!" Somewhere in there, the clock struck 2:11AM and we had a toast.

Ahhh, another fun Seapods show in the books! See? Don't fret. Nothing to worry about. They always come back. You just have to hand them enough money.

It was awesome seeing the boys (all of them) together and enjoying themselves again. It was awesome seeing so many friends/family together again. I love Late Nights in Albany! More praise here! OMINOUS SEAPODS, 12/17/11, Valentine's, Albany, NY-- DANA'S MOVING DOWN UNDER FAREWELL: 9.3 HUZZAHS!!! Gotta leave room for improvement.

GOOD LUCK, MONTEITH FAMILY! Don't get any cats, I'm coming to visit and I'm allergic!

Not Trey, 2/19/11, Red Square, Albany, NY

Not Trey, 2/19/11, Red Square, Albany, NY

Yah, so I was planning on going to Albany to see Dana Monteith / Lo Faber / Aaron Maxwell and had no idea Trey Anastasio was playing the same night (conflicting with Dana's set) til like the week before. It didn't matter. I don't have nearly enough Monty Roberts in my life at the moment, so at no point was a mere thought even given to checking out Trey at the Palace instead. Fuck no. DANA 1 / TREY 0

Still in the cloud of phlegm that was a Post Winter Carnival Bug of some sorts, the days leading up to the 19th were spent: eating homemade chicken soup, neti'ing 3 x day, & popping Mucinex-D like Skittles-- cuz there was *NO WAY* in hell I was missing this lineup.

Around 5:45pm, I snuck into Red Square for a taste of soundcheck, where Dos Heteros +++ was happening. Sitting in with Lo Faber & Aaron Maxwell for a portion of the evening would be: Zabeth Chase (Henry's House, Friday Night Freakshow, Alex Mazur (Maaze), & none other than Tom "The Old TP" Pirozzi (Ominous Seapods, Deoro, Lo Faber Band, The Holiday Ramblers, Shark Sandwich) on bass. Let the mutation continue!

Dana arrived, sans wooden plank. He would have to find one before showtime or risk being without percussion for his set. The suspense!

We hit up McGeary's for dinner -> Jillian's, to say hey to members of the Stone Revival Band. Our timing was kind of perfect and we were treated to some soundcheck. This included the fabulous Mop-Topped-Liverpudlian himself, Vinnie Amico (moe.) singing lead on Casey Jones.

-> Red Square, where tequila was dranked.

Good news, everyone! Dana found a plank! He took the stage and rocked out his alt-country Truck Stop Love Ballads and a few Ominous Seapods standards. The Old TP came up and played on a few too, including The Holiday Ramblers Theme Song (once proper lightage was provided). Lo Faber got up and joined them on Waiting For Da Bomb. Awesomeness.

The place started to fill in about halfway into Dana's set (shortly after the Trey show let out) and it had started to buzz. Lots of familiar faces in the room. People were singing along. It was an all-around great vibe. Dana was flat-out, fucking awesome! Why did he ever stop doing the solo shows? No matter that now-- Monty Roberts is BACK! You have no choice, he will tenderize your brain and seduce your cockles. TROOF.

What's inside that magic credenza?

Dos Heteros have been on fire as of late! This night was no exception! Highlights: Wall, an amazing amount of sound, a brilliant & dark song. When She Go, cuz it's one of my favorites!! Thirsty, Angeline, Mile x Mile- see below re: Aaron's breathtaking crystal clear voice. Nightingale, cuz it was kickin' and had the room shaking. Hearing Lo nail If I Only Had a Brain, was sweet and sugary good. If you weren't smiling during this song, you have no soul. Totes cereal. More jaw-dropping madness with Aaron on Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

Highlights (cont.): A killer Upside Down & Inside Out, w/ Zabeth Chase on additional vocals. A groovin' Tide, at which point Teep & Alex Mazur were already sitting in. Hellfire (kickin'), Gretchen, Borderline (BORDERLINE!!!!). They did a quickie All Of Me encore, slightly butchered (what on Earth are the teleprompters for?), but that just adds charm.

Despite seeing Dos Heteros on-the-regular, each show is still special. A wonderful little treat that I cherish every moment of. The guys are in the fucking Zone. They are shredding on acoustic guitars, nailing new arrangements for old favorites, having a TON of fun, and are you tired of hearing me talk about how crystal clear and perfect Aaron's voice sounds right now? Goosebumps. The mind, it boggles.

What a great night! Late Night Albany Rock. Old Skool. Would love to see the Seapods & God Street Wine side projects collaborate on some more gigs. Fill a room with friends and enjoy some music together. Shit yeah, let's do this!

[adult swim] seriously needs to adjust their late-night Saturday schedule. Can't the 30 people who tune-in for anime just watch it^ on their computers now? Where's a Venture Bros when you need it?? When I finally passed out, Chrissy was telling Mr. Furley exactly what was inside the envelope. You know hilarity ensued.

Sunday's Breakfast was (as always) positively delightful at the lovely Madison Cafe, but the Waterhole's Bloody Marys are way better.

And *THAT*, readers, is how I had an awesome night of music in Albany on 2/19 and didn't even go to Trey (who I hear was fabulous, btw!). (Stone Revival Band,) Dana Monteith, Dos Heteros + Friends, 2/19/11, Red Square, Albany, NY: 9.8 HUZZAHS!

shows i never reviewed... dana monteith, moe., al & the transamericans, beastie boys, & MORE!

yeah, so i got a busy gig (vh1's 40 greatest reality tv moments... TUNE IN) and was too busy to write reviews, and now i have to write a moe.down 8 review... but when i got home from moe.down and went to turn on my computer-- well, it didn't turn on... so i'm on a different computer right now while the apple store fixes my imac's power supply for free- which is really fucking cool of them cuz apparently the caps melted by themself or something- but i'm sans personal imac for 5-7 days... so the moe.down pics aren't being uploaded til then... and i realized that yeah... i didn't review shows for like 4 months... so... um... cliff's notes time! these will be sketchy recollections and i will do my best to highlight the highlights!

dana monteith at wicked willy's, 5/2/07... great! the crowd was loving dana! seriously, there was a good turnout of old mutants- but there was an even bigger turnout of just random bar peeps, and every single one of them had their chairs turned around and were rockin' out to dana and rick on the dobro. he didn't disappoint! though, i believe he did break a string within the first 5 seconds of the first song. FUCKIN ROCK N ROLL BABY!!!! http://www.danamonteith.com

moe. at the highline ballroom, 5/3, 5/4, 5/5... brand new venue!!! highline is an awesome new (well, it was in may, so according to new york city standards it's "old" by now, but to me, still new and exciting) and great venue. great acoustics, chill security, you can pretty much see the stage from anywhere in the venue so it's a fun little setup. AND they serve magic hat (even though i can't drink it anymore). i really enjoyed the 3 nights there (i went 3 out of 4) and they really did welcome moe. with open arms.

all three moe. shows were AWESOME! and i gotta say one of the nights chuck really tore shit up, another night al really tore shit up... i can't remember which nights though. the band was really together and the venue was intimate enough that it really reflected back into the music. the first night fishbone showed up towards the end and did like 3 songs, which was pretty phat and really high energy- very fun. rob took out the stand up bass during one of the shows and wanked for a little too long which was a little much. but i do dig the stand up bass. just gotta know where you're going with it, that's all, and i'm not sure he did. all three nights we stood pretty close up on the al side which was fun, i am typically a chuck-sider, but some venues it's just easier to stand al-side. i likey both! one night a 40 year old fat man was hitting on me. that was really gross. like, really dude, know your limits. way to go on the confidence and all, but still. nuh-uh.

oh, also- sidenote, unbeknownst to me, i was running about a 101 fever by the 2nd night of these shows and apparently had a pretty horrible sinus infection (probably from my plane ride back from seattle the week before). having come directly from a couple of really difficult days at work doing an REO Speedwagon news package on a tight deadline with no footage (always fun!), i was already worn out and blaming stress and allergies for the disease... but since i had no voice- literally- *none*-- i ended up bringing a little pocket notebook and pen so i could communicate with my friends... but it was hard to heckle the band! i tried to on paper, but it didn't have the same effect. sadness! :) still - AWESOME FUCKING SHOWS!!!!

dana monteith at wicked willy's, 6/27/07... TRUCK STOP LOVE BALLADS!!! EFFIN' GREAT!!!! DANA RULEZ 1. rick on the dobro again, the crowd was once again diggin' it. eugene came and filmed which was really cool. good stuff!!! JERKY-> TEARJERKY-> JERKY... i'll bet you didn't think it could be done... but it CAN and it WAS... dana monteith, ladies and gentlemen... dana monteith!

ten feet tall at arlene's grocery, 7/14/07... an indie band from dc that did a northeast summer tour and made a stop through new york city to ROCK THE HIZZY! fuck yah! dude, ten feet tall totally did rock the hizzy! arlene's was rockin' dude, people were dancing and wanted more!!! i'd put up some pics and a video except my computer is at the shop (see first paragraph). they sound like a funkalicious and rocksteady blues traveler jambandy rock band and they do one hell of a rolling fucking rap medley! they were really cool!!! i highly recommend these guys! and their guitar player, one mr. josh "bach" himmelsbach carries the guitar playing eggbeating whisk torch in the tradition of the ominous seapods--- really--- what more can you ask for??? GO SEE TEN FEET TALL!!! http://www.tenfeettallband.com

beastie boys at the hammerstein, 8/10/07...
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET! i tried to get tickets to this show twice- the day they went on presale, and the day they went on sale to the public. both were sold out immediately. motherfuckers! then i thought, well, maybe that's not so bad... that's the day my 40 greatest show was set to air and we were in a pretty rough state (can you say "live satellite feed"?). so when i walked into my office the morning of 8/10 after being on my cell phone during my commute with the NOC broadcast coordinator to arrange buying satellite feed time because there was no way we would output and get a messenger out to the broadcast facility in time for quality control and air time, and ran right into mr. "blingy" niebling and he told me his buddy had a few extra tickets, one part of me said "FUCKING TAKE THE TICKETS LYNN YOU DESERVE THEM" and the other said, "YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOUR SHOW IS GOING TO AIR LYNN"... and the show was set to start at 8pm... and our show was set to air at 8pm... so for all intents and purposes, if our show didn't start feeding at the correct time, it wouldn't air before the beasties even hit the stage and by then it would be too late for me to do anything about it... so i IM'd a couple of people in between fielding phone calls and emails so we could get the show to air... and see who would be able to go at such a last minute... and afterwards realized a few more people probably would have been interested and then i felt bad cuz i forgot about them... but the land up was... OUR SHOW AIRED!!! **AND I GOT TO GO SEE THE BEASTIE BOYS!!!!!!!!!!**

suuuuure, the theme was "dress to impress" and i hadn't slept in 3 weeks or showered in 3 days... but whatthefuckever dude. ross fucking ran to 1515 and handed the tapes to the satellite feed peeps like a fucking superhero, we made it to air, and i got to go see the beasties. so HUZZAAAAAH! it was an all instrumental show- which means, they played their instruments, and they fucking rocked dude! mixmaster mike had some sort of family obligation that day, so he couldn't turn it out. i think they had the maestro on the turntables? but the show was insane! music was great! they jammed! the beasties are a fucking jam band when they have those instruments on- but not a fucking spacy one, and don't expect them to do anything other than be the beasties as a jamband, and you won't be disappointed, you know? which is what is great about them, they are and always will be the beastie boys.

the stage setup was really cool, they had some funky overhanging hi-def tv screen thing that looked like a miro mobile (didn't move), but the images were on there constantly moving around like it was a full screen (does that make sense? i don't care, these are a lot of reviews). and either side of the stage there were full screens to match the mobile. on stage they were definitely dressed to impress. i gotta say, i've been spoiled being in the mezz for so long. these were floor seats, and i'm a short girl. i could barely see what was going on onstage below the beastie heads. i saw a lot of jumping, but it was awesome. also, the crowd was an interesting one. a lot of meatheads past their prime, trying to re-live their prime doing the "bending over football player stance getting ready to beat the shit out of you" dance. getting way too drunk. apparently a couple of mosh pits started up, i didn't see this (see: short girl), but blingy did from the mezz. oh, and remember that pic that went around a while back? anatomy of a douchebag? the guy in the pink polo shirt, upturned collar, backwards tilted baseball hat, shorts, etc.? that guy was standing next to us hitting on some asian girl trying to get her to go back to his cousin's apartment for a party. good stuff. also, some drunk asshole bowled me over on the way out of the venue and i've *never* seen gullo so close to beating the shit out of someone- i actually had to separate the two of them after gullo screamed in his face, "YOU FUCKING KNOCKED OVER A LITTLE GIRL". that was fun. so i got to scream at a big drunk guy, "OKAY--- YOU ARE A DRUNK ASSHOLE AND YOU FUCKING KNOCKED ME OVER, GO FUCK YOURSELF-- THERE WILL BE NO FIGHTS--- THIS ENDS HERE... WALK AWAY FROM EACH OTHER. NOW." which actually worked. the guy gave gullo a high five. then he walked into someone else and started a fight. it was fun. then i bought a t shirt. oh, and then there was a dirty bomb scare on 34th street when we left. that was fun too!

BEASTIES--- PLENTY OF HUZZAHS!!!! last time i saw these guys was at msg with degrazio, michelle m., kochman, etc. at the "holy shit i fucking shot that" show--- they rocked my fucking face off (so did something else)--- but this was awesome too!!! can't wait to see them again!!! love these guys!!

al and the transamericans at the lion's den, 8/25/07... this was AWESOME! and a great warmup for moe.down!!! a bunch of covers, a bunch of originals, the place wasn't nearly as packed as i thought it would be! hern kept screaming, "KIRK, I WANT TO HAVE YOUR BABIES!!!" which was great! we really had a great time! i dig it! oh, and our waitress was a nutter, which was cool i guess? the lion's den has been re-done since the last time i was there. new paint job, the stage looks different, they put a new curtain up, the bar looks different... the floor is new? that awful orange paint that used to sweat off the walls and stain your clothes when the a/c broke is gone! high-class shit, y'all! CEG did a number on that place. ha! anyways, it was a great time, and i'm sure i'd have more to say about it, except, no... i really don't. it was fun, and i'll leave it at that--- i'll go see them more and more... and i did at moe.down. and you'll read my extensive moe.down review in a week or so when my computer is back. so... until then...

HU-FUCKING-ZZAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Dana Monteith, 8/12/06, Gabe's Hootenanny, Sussex, NJ

my good buddy gabe just bought a house out in the middle of nowhere in jersey and his one wish was to have a kickass housewarming party... in order for that to happen he needed one important ingredient: truck stop love ballads. and there's only one man in the world that can provide such an ingredient: dana monteith. so dana was called in special for the task. truck stop love ballads DELIVERED.

i was about 10 minutes from gabe's place when my phone rang- it was dana. "where are you???" "i have no fucking idea." "well, i'm waiting for you to get here before i start!" "ack!!!!! you're waiting for me???" "yeah, guppy, get here FAST! or i'm gonna drink even more!!!" "okay okay, i think i'm close--- have a cheeseburger and by the time you're finished i'll be there!"

i pulled into gabe's neighbor's driveway and parked (the place was packed- satellite parking was the only option!). gabe's house is huuuuuge and gorgeous! the yard was amazing and featured a giant vegetable garden!!! man, if only i wanted to live in the middle of fucking nowhere in jersey!!! damn!!! i had to wait for setbreak for the guided tour- which had about 15 other people on it... gabe should have gotten a megaphone for the full effect.

but rewind back to the music--- dana started off set I with unmarked trunk. a touching tale of the road and love lost and possibly my favorite truck stop love ballad of all time! i didn't keep a setlist, but through his 2.5 sets he went on to play some classic truck stop love ballads: self destruct button, on a dime, afterglow, slipping back, creamery rag... and some classic ominous seapods favorites: waiting room, hope i shall arrive soon, the old gp, jet smooth ride, bong hits and porn... there were more... in fact, gabe and g3 had printed out a whole bunch of seapods tunes from stretch's pink flamingo file and dana happilly obliged as best he could (a few of the tunes he had even rehearsed the night before!).

set 2.5 got a little "blue" and "messy" due to the "alcohol" and "darkness". but there was cake, coffee, and lovely cream puffy things... however, there has been a promise of a "downstairs bar opening" party that will ALSO feature truck stop love ballads this winter... and GUITARAOKE... sasso.com is going to set up a computer server that will spew out requested song lyrics and music for dana to please party goers with even the most discerning musical tastes. gordon lightfoot? no problem! johnny cash? no problem! michael bolton? NOW YOU GOT A PROBLEM!

i took some footage of dana rockin' out the backyard- please view it!

gabe's backyard housewarming hootenanny featuring truck stop ballads by dana monteith? 10 HUZZAHS! rock the sussex! THANKS GABE!!! your party was SUPERB!
