Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra, 1/28/12, Mexicali, Teaneck, NJ

Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra,
CS Gray Band, & Jason Crosby,
1/28/12, Mexicali, Teaneck, NJ

Whose Love Orchestra?

If you don't already, alls you need to know is that Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra is the codename for God Street Wine, when God Street Wine plays "stealth", in venues they've long since outgrown. There were however, some slight lineup changes this time around. Tomo is not on this Continent, so the awesome Dave Diamond (Pozzy Ghuru, too many more to name, etc.), filled in on drums. Dan Pifer was unexpectedly called off to decapitate Scotsmen in the European Highlands or something, so Tom "The Old TP" Pirozzi (Ominous Seapods, The Lo Faber Band) studied super hard and took over slappity slappin' the bass duties for the night (fortunately, he is already Mad Skilled on at least a handful of tunes, from playing with the Lo Faber Band). Jason Crosby is always a bonus, and he would be sitting in on keys & fiddle, adding his special brand of zazz to the entire evening.

People were really psyched for this, but it seemed none so much as Guitarist Lo Faber himself, who has been daylighting as a PhD student/Professor at Princeton University, and in the days before the gig, lit up the band's facebook page, calling for requests & counting down the hours until "the Big Bevo Lovin'". Sure, I had been excited before, but Lo absolutely bursting with excitement was what really got me the most fucking excited-- cuz that dude's excitement is worth getting excited over. Truth be told, I was also very excited to have the exact appropriate & special occasion to wear my purple pants. So, that was pretty exciting too.

After a delicious dinner with even yummier company, Jason Crosby opened the evening of music with a short set of his artful, delicate, moody, ethereal zazz. The following day he would be flying to Ireland to play a couple of gigs with the legendary Van Morrison. You know, whatevs.

CS Gray Band then jacked it up and rocked it out. Singer/Guitarist Chris Gray drove a full set of hearty Rock 'n' Roll with touches of Zeppelin, Petty, Springsteen, and Wilco-esque Sensibilities. Not to mention Mr. Jon Bevo, himself, wailing on keys-- which doesn't hurt. (NOTE: Dan Pifer is also in CS Gray Band, but due to aforementioned Highlander Journey, they got Brian Posehn's older & more mysterious brother to take over on Bass.)

Then came the Lovin'. The girlies began to scream and Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra kicked that shit off right, by instantly warming the room with Get On the Train. As a total fucking GSW Nerd, I do question the pick of Souvenir in the 2 spot. It's a slow ballad and I wasn't really feelin' it (that is about as critical as this review is going to get). Shit, the rest was just as awesome as any Wino could want. Bring Back the News was super sweet. Goodnight Gretchen featured the Old TP just laying that phat fucking bass IN YOUR FACE. That's why the slogan of his breakfast cereal is The Old TP O's: BELIEVE THE BASS!^ Driving West was great, but I couldn't hear Bevo at all, and the bouncy keys are an integral part of that song, so not hearing them made me angry. So so angry in fact, that I issued an official complaint to the authorities. "Dude, it's JON BEVO'S Love Orchestra!!! Where the fuck is the Bevo???" (It got a little better towards the end of the set, but wasn't completely resolved til Set II). Imogene was fun. Upside Down & Inside Out was, as always, beautifully haunting and romantic. It also featured a lovely Lizzy Loves on backup vocals. They didn't do the "hoo's", if you were wondering (you were). A super charged and delightful Stone House closed out the Set. Goddamn that song is fun!

Set II. I left booze on stage for the musicians. Musicians love booze. It's a fact. I just knew they needed to keep up whatever buzz was responsible for the happiness they'd just smothered the room in, like so much cheese on a steak burrito. She Comes Up Softly- I never was a fan, but patience is a virtue. 6:15 was the fucking BOMB. It's one of my favorites, and if I can get personal for a brief moment-- that song has helped pull me through some tough times. Love and strength, bottled in a song. I claimed some familiar real estate near Lo and commenced rocking the fuck out. Then Epiphany, another favorite, with it's one-of-the-most-beautiful-hooks-ever, sweetly filling my ears. I never get tired of hearing it. Tide was also sweet and warm, with Todd Pasternack (Guitar) and Angela Ford Pasternack (backup vocals) of the Lo Faber Band hopping onstage for a quick cameo. Hollow Frog typically features Bevo reading from a collection of Haikus, but on this occasion it starred Spoken Word Artist, Frank Messina, "the Mets Poet", reading from his book, Full Count, about a Psychobitch. Of course she'd be a Mets fan. Just sayin'… Henrietta was fucking spectacular. Hammer & a Spike is another one of my favorites, so-- fuck yeah! High energy and lots of love to give! Epilog was like a hug. Hellfire was twisted, dark, and warped. Everything it should be (and included another Old TP Throw Down). The Nightingale Encore was spirited and tied a proper bow on the whole evening.

They raged. Dueling guitars, slanty keys, and that electricity still pulsing through their veins. Lo, Aaron, & Bevo conjured up The GSW Magic. It lives. It was all there. I SAW IT. Jason Crosby is always a delightful addition. Dave Diamond and The Old TP each brought to the table their own styles, and that chemistry sparked a heavier groove that was woven into the night. Delicious. They were all so happy up there and it reflected right back onto the crowd. It's definitely worth noting how absolutely pumped Lo was to be playing electric and with a full band. I mean, they were all psyched-- but dude was fucking psyched.

This Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra show felt a whole hell of a lot like a sweet God Street Wine show, because that's what it was. Fucking fantastic! It was awesome and I can't wait to see them do it again. When Dan comes back, TP can be a backup Hula Dancer or some shit. That's fine too.

Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra, w/ CS Gray band, & Jason Crosby, 1/28/12, Mexicali, Teaneck, NJ: 9 HUZZAHS!!!! Points deducted for lack of Bevo in the mix during the first set. That shit stung. Driving West with no keys? COME ON!

God Street Wine Variants / Jason Crosby & Megan Palmer, 8/17/11, The Iri ium, NYC

God Street Wine Variants / Jason Crosby & Megan Palmer,
8/17/11, The Iri ium, NYC

Empanadas in Hell's Kitchen -> Times Square. This general area was a work Hub for me for a very long time. What strikes me about Hell's Kitchen now, is that after only 3-4 years of being removed from it, roughly 60% more of it seems to have been regentrified. It's cleaner and brighter somehow. A ton of new yummy looking restaurants have popped up where total shitholes once stood. So many more places to grab a good lunch, now that I am no longer there, looking for lunch, every day. Where did all the shit go? Penn Station? Then of course, you walk 2 blocks over to Times Square, and Mars 2112 with that fucking alien (forever waving out front) remains. As does my old office building, the good ol' 1633. Ah, nostalgia.

Anyways, the Iridium Jazz Club is right across the street from there. I used to spy it from the plaza and think, "Now there's a venue I've never been to." The 'd' in the neon blue sign out front is now dead, so I will henceforth refer to it as the Iri ium, which is more fun to say. It's downstairs from Ellen's Stardust Diner, a joint where tourists flock to see waitstaff bust into song with the regularity of a traffic report. The Iri ium is a mostly seated venue, with a $15 per person, per table, per show (this night counted as two shows) minimum (+ cover). On the upside, the drinks are pricey, so it takes very little effort to hit those minimums, and the room sounds positively *gorgeous*, which makes up for everything else. So, despite being slightly poorer, at least you'll be sober and entertained by the time you leave. Yah, it's totally criminal, and it's definitely Times Square.

Tonight the schedule was for an 8PM show of Jason Crosby & Megan Palmer / GSW Variant, and a 10PM show of Jason Crosby & Megan Palmer / GSW Variant. They were able to arrange with the venue to allow people to stay for the 2nd show without paying a 2nd cover, which was very nice, but they still separated out the acts into 4 alternating chunks (and there was still an additional per table minimum for the 10PM show).

Super Musician & longtime Wino, Jason Crosby, has been hosting Iri ium Singer Songwriter Sessions at the Iri ium each month, and inviting his collaborator-friends to join him. Last month, the series premiere featured Reid Genauer (Strangefolk, Assembly of Dust) as his guest. This month, it was Lo Faber & Aaron Maxwell's (God Street Wine, The Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra) turn. SUH-WEET!

The tables filled up, the pmarkgliatelle was flowing, and Jason Crosby & Megan Palmer opened the show. The duo play moody Folky alt art Rock. Kiiiind of. It's hard to explain, but it's really beautiful and filled with hooks. Megan also rocked the mic on some pretty adorable quirky bouncy Country Rag Timey type tunes that would make Sara Bareilles totes jealous. Over the 2 sets, they took turns switching off on Guitar, Violin, & Piano. These two would dominate a movie soundtrack.

Lo & Aaron took the stage and immediately kicked into gear with a sweet Sit Right Down & Write Myself a Letter. Aaron's voice, wow. Beautiful Lies (psyched this song has been injected into the repertoire), Light My Candles, & Run To You (Lo's voice, sigh.) -- all gorgeous. The room was soaking it in. Lots of smiles, lots of people REALLY rockin' out in their seats… Like, busting OUT of those seats. I spied some air guitar. Sitting at these shows is obnoxious. Don't like it. Nope, not one bit. Lame.

The boys started a delightful Nightingale and were jamming it out, when suddenly, a figure sprinted from the back of the room, hopped on stage, and started banging on the Grand Piano! It was in fact, THE Jon Bevo (The Jon Bevo Love Orchestra, God Street Wine) joining the band mid-song, like some sort of fucking Piano Ninja! He must have been busy until this point, perhaps finishing up a NYT crossword puzzle (in Sharpie) back at the bar. 8 letters, Jon Bevo's Grand bitch: STEINWAY. -> Awesome Nightingale conclusion! What followed was a fantastic Vanity Street (lovin' the stripped down arrangement), a sweet Good Dream, and a bouncy Tide.

Jason Crosby joined the boys on complimentary violin for the rest of the set. He explained how psyched he was to be playing that evening with members of God Street Wine. That he's been a GSW fan since he was a young kid (I read somewhere that his older brother used to bring him to Wetlands), they were his favorite band back then, and they still are now. Awww.

During the absolutely fucking RIDICULOUS Change Your Mind, I got a text from D. Mighty, which led me to immediately check my Fantasy Baseball scores -> cackling like an evil genius, when I saw my team (SHABLAGOOOO) was absolutely crushing his (The Salty Matzah Balls), 9-0. This may have been the proudest moment of my entire Season, because D. Mighty's tears taste like Cashew Butter. They are fucking DELICIOUS and I will collect them in a jar and eat them with a spoon.

Shablagooooo!!!

Then, I went right back to rockin' out Change Your Mind, which was still ABSOLUTELY FUCKING RIDICULOUS. They CRUSHED it. So much energy! Goddamn, I love that song! She Comes Up Softly was beautiful and Wendy was a sweet set closer and totally got the crowd buzzing and left them that way.

It was time for the switchover again, so the stage got re-set for the 10PM show and Jason & Megan's 2nd set (see above). Much of the crowd had to take off for the "2nd seating", cuz I suppose some people have Day Jobs and/or train schedules to contend with.

Lo & Aaron's 2nd set opened with the hauntingly sweet Epilog. We got a lovely Ballroom, Driving West, Straight Line, and tender Strange As It Seems. Jason came back out and we were treated to a new guest on Piano- Pete Levin (The Blind Boys of Alabama, God Street Wine, etc.), who totally rocked that shit out for the rest of the set! A spirited Borderline. Thirsty, which we learned Lo wrote after reading Tom Robbins' Still Life With Woodpecker. Cute. Goodnight Gretchen and a siiiiiick, rockin' Hellfire, complete with Super Jam, where everyone got a chance to shine. Everyone still in the room, both on the stage & in the crowd-- everyone had a shit-ton of fun. Hell, even the people who had to leave early- those motherfuckers had fun during the 2nd show too, they just may not have known why. It was a fun fun night.

Awesome, sounded beautiful, and left me approximately $60 poorer, but what are ya gonna do?

I love the fact that some spectacular keyboard players who used to be in God Street Wine just happened to drop by. Fuck yeah. They should do this more often. Next time at Brooklyn Bowl w/ Dan Pifer & Joe Russo! Or ya know, Dan & Tomo. YES! Either way, I'm in. LET'S DO THIS!

Thanks to Jason Crosby for putting an awesome night of music together! Jason Crosby & Megan Palmer -> GSW Variant -> Jason Crosby & Megan Palmer -> GSW Variant, 8/17/11, The Iri ium: 9 HUZZAHS!! All sorts of bonus points made up for the monetary deductions.

Almost God Street Wine, 5/20 & Dos Heteros, 5/22/11

Almost God Street Wine, 5/20/11, Joe's Pub, NYC
&
Dos Heteros, 5/22/11, Mighty High Mountain Festival, Tuxedo Ridge, NY

FRIDAY, 5/20/11

Yah, so I skipped my Sister's Auf Ruf (which is just a fancy Jew name for a short prayer that's given a week before one's wedding) on this particular Friday night to go see Almost God Street Wine at Joe's Pub. She gets me all of Memorial Day Weekend with aforementioned wedding and Good Lord Cheesus knows that I'm missing my choice of 3 awesome Summer Music Happenings (Summer Camp, DelFest, & Phish's Bethel Jaunt) because of the timing. No, the weekend before belonged to God Street Wine. Or rather, Almost God Street Wine.

These Early Friday Joe's Pub sets are a rough commute to start with. Throw in a Subway Series and it's kind of a nightmare-- traffic suuuucked. I started on the mojitos the second I got there. Rum -> Almost Wine. Perfectly safe.

Lo Faber, Aaron Maxwell, Dan Pifer, and Jon Bevo. 4/5 of the equation = Almost God Street Wine. Or perhaps Das Quartinas? Hmm... No matter, the boys assumed positions and kicked off the show with a beautiful Home Again to get us all back in The Zone. It worked. Did I mention that song was beautiful? The whole fucking set was beautiful. The sound was perfect. The tone was sweet. The room was focused. Bevo had a set of keys sitting on top of the Baby Grand. So so good.

With such a short set, it was pretty much all highlights. Weird Dream was inspired. Supplemental GSW member, Jason Crosby, came out to play 6-string violin starting with a beautiful (that's #4) Silver and would stay in for the rest of the show. A hot Hellfire in honor of the impending Rapture. Light My Candles was freakin' awesome. Aaron just killed the end vocals on it-- wowza! Is this getting redundant? GoTT was really fun. Tide, glorious. Audience participation. HUGE fucking highlight: CHEAP UTAH BLUES. Super duper fun. Aaron shredding on Lo's Telecaster! Dan layed it down, Lo brought it, and Jason took it over the edge. Into the Sea ... just absolutely ... beautiful (#5). Positively wonderful to have The Highlander himself, Dan Pifer, bouncing around and harmonizing in the back. Bevo set the mood perfectly with the traditional electric approach. Awesome.

Lo got to pick the encore cuz it was his Birthday--- or because he writes the setlists. Hmm?? He chose Dire Strait's Romeo & Juliet, which was quite pretty, but wasn't New Eyes, 6:15, or Bring Back The News. Earlier in the set, the crowd serenaded him with a popular Birthday number that was most definitely NOT a copyrighted tune that costs a ton of money to license. No, nothing like that at all. He also refused to put the frilly Birthday Crown on-- probably because he didn't want to disrupt his stylin' new do. See, Gabe? I told you we should have gone with the tiara. Happy Birthday, Lo! :)

Goddamn, it was great to see the boys together like this again. Keeps us young, it does. Can't wait for the next one!!! Brand New Pussycat? Dan would rock that shit.

Sooo... When are we gonna get Tomo in on one of these things? Tomo, you bring the Egg-Shaker, I'll get you a Triangle.

SUNDAY, 5/22/11

Late Saturday night, my Festival Spidey-Sense began to tingle. It had been raining nonstop for about 2 weeks at that point. "Mud." I said out loud to no one in particular. This was quickly confirmed by my Mole in the Field, Rhonda Lieberman, who declared it "The Muddy High Festival". Yes, it would surely be a rubber boots kinda day.

Breakfast^ doesn't even get me up this early on a Sunday, but skiing and most anything GSW^^-related will. Steel thermos of coffee in hand, I arrived at Tuxedo Ridge (formerly Sterling Forest Ski Mountain, where my Middle School used to bus us up for night-skiing on Wednesdays) around 11:10AMish, in case the Dos Heteros set actually started at it's scheduled 11:30AM slot (which I didn't buy for a second). It was overcast, misty/precipitous, and with a massive amount of hay absorbing the bulk of it--- innocuously muddy. Though quite squishy up close to the stage.

At Noon, Lo & Aaron took the stage with the debut of Rain by the Beatles. Very cute. There was a sparse crowd, but more people were crawling out of the woodwork as the set moved along. Drive West, Tide. Molly was particularly awesome and afterwards some Wook in the back announced he had some in his pocket. Stranger was beautiful (#6). Hey Pocky (A)Way -> RU4 Real? was fun. Another sick Light My Candles with Aaron belting it out towards the end--- his voice actually cleared my sinuses. An Aaron Neti. He could market that. Gretchen got some screams from the crowd. Book of Rules was also cute. And Nightingale was... really fucking great. Love it!

Mad propz to the older couple who were dancing their asses off all set. Rhonda said they'd been at it all weekend.

More folks should be getting to these Dos Heteros gigs. They are a satisfyingly sweet fix. Good for the ol' GSW hankering. And sometimes you don't know how badly you missed it until it's right in front of your face. Doooo iiiiit!

Ahh, good shit. A later & longer Joe's slot next time around would be nice. And for fuck's sake can we finally organize an official afterparty for it? Let's make it happen.

Almost God Street Wine, 2/25/11, Joe's Pub, NYC

"It was like being in a womb. It was fucking awesome!"
-Rhonda Lieberman

Sweet Baby 211, there was so much fucking traffic on the way to this show that I nearly had a heart attack! GAAAH! I finally made it to the SOLD OUT Joe's Pub with a few minutes to spare. Phew! So, I had a lovely mojito, ran into a ton of folks, and made my way over to the little nook where Mark and I landed at the Todd Snider show last month.

Dos Heteros + 2! Lo Faber & Aaron Maxwell + Jon Bevo & Dan Pifer! ALMOST GOD STREET WINE!!! Fuck yeah!

First of all, there was a fucking Grand Piano on the stage- let's start with that. Yes. Sweet.

The boys (still poppin' fresh from Jamcruise) hit the stage and welcomed us with a bouncy Borderline. Thirsty was beautiful. Jason Crosby joined them on violin for Bevo's catchy-as-hell Beautiful Lies. -> Stranger. Wow. This was Almost God Street Wine. I kept expecting Lo to open the drawer to the onstage credenza and our Live Tomo 3D Hologram would jump out and play. Like the size of Mike Teevee. "Can you hear me? Am I coming in clear?"

Upside Down & Inside Out was stunning. The crowd even started to join in--- ahh, gotta love those 2 drink minimum tables at a short show! Molly was nothing short of brilliant and featured Lo absolutely fucking ROCKING OUT on the guitar solo! Hot damn! Then an awesome Chop!, which Tomo may not remember, but I've been wanting to hear again for a decade. AWESOME!!! Funny Kinda Love-- also AWESOME!!! Then, by far the most random of all historical GSW song resurrections over the past two years--- Edgar's Back In Town! (<-- hey man, it's purple.) Wow! This was probably the first time I've ever heard it live! That makes me feel less old! Totes rockin'!

Jason came back on for the remainder of the show. Lo switched to an electric for a beautiful Epiphany. With the electric guitar, Bevo, & Jason, the twirly-ness of the song remained solidly intact. Awesome. -> Angeline, which Aaron & his lungs totally nailed (again). His voice is unreal right now. UN-FUCKING-REAL. And then a super-happy Nightingale to close out the set. Having the other two guys and Jason on this, adds so many more dimensions. It's just wonderful. They encored with Straight Line, our last chance to hear Aaron show off for at least a few weeks.

The set was entirely too short, but I savored every second of it, I tell you whut.

Man, I love Dos Heteros, but Almost God Street Wine is so fucking awesome too. The guys were smiling the ENTIRE time (as was the rest of the room). Dan held down the groove all goddamn night. It was so wonderful to see him bouncing in the back, hearing his voice, and then disappearing mysteriously into the night. Bevo totally killed it on the Grand Piano, it was great to see/hear him again so soon. Jason's violin is such a natural compliment to the mix, it's a pleasure whenever he pops up at a gig. And of course, Lo & Aaron fucking rule.

Joe's Pub was a great venue for this gig, except that we all got booted out of there immediately after the show, so they could set up for the 2nd (Primetime) show of the night. That kinda blew cuz there was no time to celebrate with the Winos. We must take over Joe's for the full night next time! Yes! And perhaps add an Afterparty?

In the back room after the show, the exchange of a Giant Red Suitcase took place. The scene itself was reminiscent of Pulp Fiction. However, we did learn what the contents of this particular giant red suitcase were: a chunk of The Paul Ducharme's tape collection. I felt honored to hold one of his old cassettes. One particular was from the Rhinecliff Hotel in '88 or '89 with a dementedly sick setlist. There was a familiar sort of old tape cassette residue on it that stuck to my fingers long after I'd put it back with it's brethren. Perhaps I've absorbed some of it's powers? These will hopefully make their way onto archive.org very soon.

This show felt like being embraced in a great, big, warm hug. See Rhonda's quote up top? She got the same feeling from this truly special evening. I really really really really really REEEEAAAAALLLY hope they break out this lineup some more. Even if it's only every few months. Or twice a year. Too greedy? The thing is if I say "at least once a year", it'd be a lie, because I'd really really really really REEEEAAALLLY like to see it again, at least once more, this year (and every year). Or like, every (remaining) month (left on Earth). Can I freebase Almost GSW?

Almost God Street Wine, 2/25/11, Joe's Pub, NYC: 10 HUZZAHS!!! AWESOME.

^ This is exactly why I will remain hopeful for a New Eyes... someday.
